The Story Behind Grand Hawaii Electric
The Founder
My name is Johny Le, and my journey in electrical work didn’t begin behind a desk — it began on job sites, with conduit in hand, blueprints under my arm, and long days climbing ladders and navigating manholes. For over a decade, I’ve been shaping Hawai‘i’s skyline one wire, one panel, and one project at a time.
At just 24 years old, in January 2015, I was still a third-year apprentice when I stepped onto the sprawling redevelopment of the Waikīkī International Market Place. What started as learning the ropes quickly turned into leadership — within six months, I was managing the entire second and third floors of that massive project. Leading a crew of 16 electricians — 15 journeymen and an apprentice — I took full ownership of every phase: layout, rough-in, pipe bending, trim-out, and beyond. That project wrapped in 2016, but it set a clear standard for me: take on the toughest jobs, lead with excellence, and deliver every time.
Next came the Ae‘o and Whole Foods Ward high-rise project, where I ran layout and electrical installations from the ground floor all the way up to the 41st story. Using precision tools like Leica Geosystem layout machines alongside good old tape measures and blueprints, I oversaw crews of 5 to 10 electricians, managing everything from underground conduit to transformer installation, unit rough-ins, and finishing touches.
Then came the challenge of the HART Rail Project — installing industrial-grade cable trays across four rail stations from Kapolei to Pearl City. Pulling over 200,000 feet of fiber optic and power cable, the work demanded exacting standards and leadership under pressure.

I’ve also been hands-on in residential construction, wiring over 30 single-family homes and numerous multi-family complexes in the Ho‘opili community. My experience spans high-rises like A‘ali‘i, Central Ala Moana, and Sky Ala Moana. critical facilities like Tripler Hospital, and military projects including Fort Shafter and the DISA Project. I’ve installed fire alarms, security systems, and high-voltage switchgear — working with wire sizes from #12 to massive 500 MCM cables — all while ensuring every connection meets exacting specs.
Before stepping into the electrical field, I laid a strong foundation in the trades by completing a 2-year carpentry program at Honolulu Community College from 2008 to 2010, where I earned an Associate Degree in Carpentry. That early training taught me how to read plans, think in three dimensions, and work with precision — skills that transferred seamlessly into electrical work. From there, I entered the electrician apprenticeship program, became a licensed journeyman, and eventually earned my C-13 electrical contractor license. I trained with both IBEW 1186 and Associated Builders and Contractors, rounding out my education with a blend of hands-on experience and formal instruction.
It’s this deep, firsthand experience — from apprentice to project lead to licensed contractor — that fuels Grand Hawaii Electric. Our company is built on more than just technical skill. We are built on leadership, integrity, and relentless hustle. We focus on what matters most: residential electrical service and maintenance.
